Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow – Audio Book Review

Nevermoor #2 by Jessica Townsend
Audio Book Narrator: Gemma Whelan

No amount of words can describe how much I love this series, especially the audio books. It’s one of the few that I have listened to more than once and I greatly suspect there will be another listen one day.

Morrigan Crow may have defeated her deadly curse and joined the mystical and prestigious Wundrous Society, but her journey has only just begun….

The people of the secret, magical city of Nevermoor have a long memory of the monstrous attacks orchestrated by the only other known Wundersmith, Ezra Squall-and they seem to think Morrigan’s own knack for Wunder makes her just as deadly.

And so it’s no surprise that when citizens of the Wundrous Society begin to go missing, Morrigan is the number one suspect.

Now it’s up to Morrigan and her friends, new and old, to prove her innocence-before she’s expelled from the Wundrous Society, her only home, for good.

This captivating and heart-pounding sequel to the New York Times bestselling and #1 Kids’ Indie Next pick Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow is filled with as many thrills and twists as the first book, and is sure to keep readers ripping through the pages.

Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow is a continuation of the Nevermoor series where we watch Morrigan grow from a young girl who was cursed to die on Eventide to participating in the Wunder Society trials. Being a Wundersmith is no easy thing considering everyone fears and hates them. Those who know she is a Wundersmith all decide it is best to keep her talent known only to a few. The problem is that they decide to tell her fellow classmates who aren’t all necessarily happy to have her amongst their ranks. In this first year, Morrigan faces many challenges – most of which are related to prejudices against her. To make matters worse, Jupiter is often away trying to solve the riddle of why certain Nevermoor individuals are disappearing, so he is not always available to help work through her concerns, frustrations, and anger.

I love how cleverly written this series is as it weaves in interesting characters, such as Murgatroyd and Dearborn, who are two of Wunder Society teachers, to a unique story that provides the reader with a look at some of the Wunder Society inner workings to the struggles of Morrigan as she has to deal with being ostracization by her classmates and prejudices from her teacher. Plus, there’s an overarching mystery needing to be solved.

Audio Book Review:

I think Gemma Whelan is absolutely the perfect choice for this book. She does so many voices and all so extremely expressive. From Hawthorne’s never-ending enthusiasm for everything, to Jupiter’s way of trying to mollify Morrigan’s growing concerns to Jack’s cool, aloof, but caring demeanor. So many listen to audio books in the car, or traveling, or when doing chores. With all the potential distractions, it is easy to miss something and keep attention 100% of the time. With all the different voices Gemma does, I love being able to immediately pick out which character is speaking, making it much easier to follow the story.

Recommended to anyone who was a fan of Harry Potter or who likes to be swept up into another world that is so interesting you just want to know more and more about it,
